HEAD SOUTH BY WEAVING is the musical project of Hampshire based guitar player and writer Graeme Lockett.
For many years Graeme has collected music, with a keen ear for recordings made between 1968 and 1974 and especially from the folk-rock / acid-folk stable. HSBW was originally conceived in 2006 as a method of approximating the acoustic playing of Graeme's finger-picking heroes but other influences quickly crept in, and the sound expanded to something less sparse.
An initial set of seven songs were recorded at home in late 2006 and early 2007 and handed out to friends on a very cheaply produced CD-r. Some of these recordings found their way via the internet to the ears of Alison O'Donnell, former singer with Mellow Candle (whose "Swaddling Songs" album from 1972 has entered the realm of legend with original copies fetching a fortune at auction). A dialogue between the two started, resulting in Graeme writing and recording the music to "Harbour Boy" (with Anthony Read on drums), which would eventually be released as the opening song on Alison's "Hey Hey Hippy Witch" album.
Soon after this the pair recorded versions of Nick Drake's "Day Is Done" and Nico's "Frozen Warnings" as the second release on the fledgling Fruits de Mer label and then, slightly by accident started recording a set of songs that would become "The Execution of Frederick Baker" (TO BE RELEASED ON VINYL ON 12 NOVEMBER 2012 BY RITUAL ECHO RECORDS).
Alongside making "The Execution of Frederick Baker", Graeme has contributed original material to the Fruits de Mer subscriber-only releases "We Come Bearing Gifts" and "A Phase We've Been Through", as well as providing a version of "Rain" for FdM's "Eddie Cochran Instrumentals" ep and collaborating with Tony Swettenham (aka Frobisher Neck) on a version of La Dusseldorf's "Silver Cloud" released in 2012 on the double album "Head Music" (also on FdM).
